STATEMENT BY R.I. DEMOCRATIC CHAIR ON
GOVERNOR GINA M. RAIMONDO AS SHE DELIVERS HER LAST
STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS TO RHODE ISLAND
WARWICK, R.I. (Feb. 3, 2021) – “It was with mixed feelings that we heard Governor Gina M. Raimondo deliver her last State of the State Address tonight,” said Joseph M. McNamara, Chair of the Rhode Island Democratic Party Wednesday. “We’re so proud of her, as she heads off to Washington (D.C.) to become our next U.S. Secretary of Commerce, but we’ll miss her great leadership, here, in the Ocean State.”
“She still awaits final confirmation by the U.S. Senate but we’re optimistic she will get a speedy – and deserved – approval,” he said.
“Growing up in a working-class family in Cranston, to attend Harvard, Yale and Oxford, and then become state Treasurer and Governor, she faced many challenges but demonstrated a true strength of intelligence, character and leadership,” he said.
“She strengthened the foundation of education for countless pre-K and Kindergarten children; made community college tuition-free for every high school graduate; and tackled a once-in-a-century pandemic with grit and skill and a human touch,” he said. “These are skills she will definitely need as she faces the massive, national challenges ahead,” McNamara said.
“President Joseph R. Biden chose wisely in picking Governor Raimondo, and America will be the better for it. On behalf of the state Democratic Party and all Rhode Islanders, we wish the Governor, her husband, Andrew, and their two children – the very best of happiness and success in the years ahead,” McNamara said.
